Happy Valentine’s Day

Cupid’s Span sculpture in San Francisco California

“Cupid’s Span”  is on the San Francisco Embarcadero waterfront and was created by sculptors Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen.  Every day this 60 foot high fiberglass and stainless steel sculpture is surrounded by bike riders, walkers, joggers, business workers, and tourists enjoying the fresh winds and sparkling views of the Bay.

Personally I have never been moved by the act of shooting an arrow into a heart, so I do not feel this sculpture emanating with lust and romance.  But that’s exactly the point.  Throughout history humans have extolled on the bliss of love.  From Roman mythology and Saint Valentine to the time of the Sochi Olympics, love has been the lively pulse of human existence.  But it’s always been different strokes for different folks.

I hope you have a great day celebrating love in whatever way makes your heart sing….

  1. What an awesome sculpture, Jet! I love the color and the whole idea. However, I agree with you. Never been one to understand how an arrow through the heart signifies love. I’d rather have a card with a heart instead, but even that is walking the line!

    • Thanks Jack. Yes, it’s a cool sculpture and although you cannot see it in this photograph, when standing there you can see the whole San Francisco Bay right in front of you. Always great to hear from you.
